CASE STUDY - QUARRY AND MINING

Starting from scratch
in one of Australia's
most regulated industries.

When Gitani Stone expanded into quarry operations, they faced a challenge that felt almost too big to start. No systems. No mining safety experience. Two new high-risk sites that needed to operate safely and legally. We helped them get there in three days.

The Situation

Gitani Stone has been in business since 1974, operating as a family-owned stone masonry business out of Seven Hills in Western Sydney. With factory operations and a strong reputation in their field, they knew how to run a business. What they did not have was experience in quarry and mining safety.

When the business expanded into rock extraction, opening quarry sites in North Queensland and Southern NSW, they were stepping into one of the most heavily regulated environments in Australian industry. These were greenfield sites with no existing safety systems, and the team needed to develop a clear understanding of what was required before operations could begin.

They called us asking about training. It quickly became clear that training alone was only part of what they needed.

What We Did

After an initial conversation to understand the scope of what Gitani was facing, we designed a focused three-day program that combined formal training with practical planning work.

Key personnel completed our Site Safety Supervisor course, which gave them the foundational knowledge and competencies required for quarry operations. We then ran a hands-on planning workshop that moved beyond theory and into Gitani's actual situation. We worked through the specific challenges of their sites, the regulatory requirements they needed to meet, and how they would build their mine safety management system from the ground up. We also introduced our Leading for Safety concepts so the team understood not just what the rules were, but how to create a safety culture that would hold up under pressure.

Three days. Two outcomes: a competent team and the beginnings of a safety management system built around their actual operation.

What Changed

CAPABILITY

Key personnel left with nationally recognised qualifications and a clear understanding of their obligations and responsibilities under mining safety legislation.

FOUNDATION

The planning workshop produced the framework for Gitani's mine safety management system, giving them a practical starting point rather than a blank page.

CLARITY

What had felt like an overwhelming and complex problem became a clear, manageable plan. The business knew exactly what needed to be built and how to build it.

CONFIDENCE

Gitani moved into quarry operations with confidence, backed by trained people and a system designed for how their sites actually operate.

"First class. Exceeded all my expectations. Made good clear common sense of so much that seemed too big to start to deal with."

— Gitani Stone

The Bigger Picture

Gitani Stone is a good example of a challenge that many growing businesses face. You know your industry. You know how to operate. But when the regulatory environment changes, or growth takes you into new territory, the gap between what you know and what you need to know can feel impossible to close quickly.

It is not. The right training and planning support, delivered practically and without unnecessary complexity, can move a business from overwhelmed to operational in a matter of days. That is what Anzen is built to do.
